2015 saw a number of movies surprising the audience, the critics and of course the box office with their success! These were ranging from small budget movies by known directors to newcomers making a mark on Bollywood with their skills to of course an epic saga, dubbed in Hindi, which we are waiting with bated breath to unfold in its second part! Here are 10 movies that surprised us this year, in the order of their release date  -

1. Baby

A film by Neeraj Pandey, Baby impressed the audiences with its straight forward story telling and patriotic flavour with a good performance by Akshay Kumar. What really got the audiences going was also a fantastic action sequence by Taapsee Pannu - go girl power!

2. Badlapur

Based on the novel by Italian crime writer Massimo Carlotto, Badlapur worked on many levels - a fantastic story delivered in a powerful way by directed Sriram Raghavan. It also featured some of the most powerful performances of the year by Varun Dhawan and Nawazuddin Siddique. It is a film which made the audience think, reflect and go back again and again!

3. Dum Laga Ke Haisha

This not so Yash Raj kind of film was produced by Yash Raj Films itself and featured the unlikely casting of a plus size heroine - newcomer Bhumi Pednekar who impressed one and all with her heartfelt portrayal of newly married woman grappling with a husband who is clearly not attracted to her. Fantastic performances by the lead actors and the ensemble cast with the sweet simple tale that it was made sure Sharat Kataria’s Dum Laga Ke Haisha won the hearts of audiences all around!

4. NH10

This Anushka Sharma produced and Navdeep Singh directed little wonder struck both a fear and a fighting spirit in the audiences’ hearts! Anushka won well deserved accolades for her portrayal of a woman made so strong by her circumstances that she refuses to bow down in face of adversities sanctioned by some sections of the society, showing the world just how strong womenkind could be!

5. Margarita with a straw

Jointly directed by Shonali Bose and Nilesh Maniyar, this film touched the audiences heart by its unusual (for films) portrayal of a young woman suffering from cerebral palsy. It showed people that patients of this disease or any other infliction that renders people disabled does not take away from their feelings and emotions as a human being. A heartfelt performance by all of its cast members, specially the lead Kalki Koechlin and Revathi, and a story reaching out to many issues which are more often than not ignored made sure that this beautifully human story struck a chord with audiences the world over. The film was also screened in several international film festivals and won many honours.

6. Masaan

Directed by Neeraj Ghaywan, Masaan sparked an interest in the Indian audiences when the film won a special jury prize at the Cannes Film Festival and several other international honours. 7. Tanu Weds Manu Returns

Riding high on the success of its prequel Tanu Weds Manu, Aanand L. Rai’s TWMR saw a surge of audiences rushing to the theatre and they did come out disappointed.
