This Cannes we saw a lot of Bollywood stars make it to the grand Red Carpet. From Jury member Vidya Balan to L'Oreal ambassadors Aishwarya & Sonam, they all dazzled at this prestigious event. In what seemed to be an opportunity to take Bollywood and India onto the world forum, perhaps one little comment from Mallika Sherawat spoiled the scene a wee bit. Or at least, that is what Priyanka Chopra feels.
Mallika Sherawat, who was at Cannes recently, spoke to Steve Gaydos where she termed India as regressive and depressing.
This came as a shock to the B-town biggies and Priyanka Chopra saw no qualms in expressing her anger openly. In a recent UNICEF event where Priyanka is the goodwill ambassador, she mentioned how offended she felt by Mallika's comments.
She said, "I think we are a progressive nation. I disagree that we are a regressive nation. We are all sitting here and talking about educating the girl child, taking our country forward. I think it's a misrepresentation of what our great nation is on the world platform,"
"When it comes to Mallika's statements, I think they were very callous and I don't agree with her. It was upsetting for me as a woman. It was upsetting for me as a girl who comes from India. I think it was extreme misrepresentation of our nation. I don't think it's fair." added a very upset Priyanka.
What are your thoughts on this episode? Though India is progressing, the unfortunate incidents of rape and violence that occur everyday do make it depressing. Added to it are the ever existing corruption issues, which do depress. However, is it fair to term it so in an international platform? In this day and age is it really possible to hide the facts from the world? Or are we really an extremely 'touchy' nation?
