A mix of action, romance & drama. Which was your favourite movie in 2014?

Year 2014 will soon be over. On the Bollywood front, we saw a mix of action, romance, comedy, thriller, suspense and not to forget a heart-warming biopic too. But before we welcome the new year let’s take a look at the movies that made us laugh, cry and go aww.

Here’s our top list of movies:

“Queen”

“Queen” released in theatres on March 7. The movie, directed by Vikas Bahl, featured Kangana Ranaut, Lisa Haydon and Rajkummar Rao. The story revolved around a Delhi based girl whose groom leaves her a day before the wedding and how she goes on her honeymoon alone. This experience changed her whole life, she not just made some new friends but it also gave her confidence and made her independent. Kangana was praised by the critics for her spectacular performance in the movie. “Queen” was like a dream. Every girl would have associated herself in some way or the other with the character of Kangana in the movie.

“Haider”:

The movie’s first poster and trailer created a huge buzz in the industry. Shahid Kapoor, who essayed the titular character, was praised by the critics for his intense performance. “Haider”, which is an adaptation of William Shakespear’s “Hamlet”, released in theatres on October 2. The movie, directed by Vishal Bhardwaj, also featured Shraddha Kapoor, Tabu, Kay Kay Menon and Irrfan Khan. Shot in Kashmir, it revolved around a son trying to find his missing father and how he takes his revenge once he finds out that he is dead.

“Highway”:

Directed by Imtiaz Ali, “Highway” featured Alia Bhatt and Randeep Hooda in lead roles. The movie revolved around a girl who is abducted just before her wedding day and how on this journey she falls in love with her abductor and realises that she is missing on so much in life. Not just the movie, but even the lead stars were highly praised for their performance. The movie released in theatres on February 20.

“2 States”:

“2 States” is a romantic comedy based on Chetan Bhagat’s novel of the same name. The movie was directed by Abhishek Verman and featured Alia Bhatt and Arjun Kapoor in lead roles. If you have read the book, then you would have realised that not much missed, they covered most of it. While Alia was praised for essaying a south Indian girl with such ease, Arjun’s Punjabi boy character came as a fresh change from his previous violent roles. The movie received mixed reviews from the critics. It also featured Amrita Singh, Revathy, Ronit Roy and Shiv Kumar Subramaniam.

“Ek Villain”:

“Ek Villain” is a revenge drama directed by Mohit Suri. The movie featured Shraddha Kapoor, Sidharth Malhotra and Riteish Deshmukh in lead roles. Sidharth and Riteish turned baddies for the movie and were praised for their performance. It released in theatres on June 27.

“Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania”

“Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania”, a gooey romantic tale, was directed by Shashank Khaitan. It featured Alia Bhatt and Varun Dhawan in lead roles. The movie revolved around Humpty and Kavya who fall in love and how Humpty tries to win over Kavya’s family. The movie was an ode to the cult romantic classic “Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge”. It released on July 11.

“Bang Bang!”:

Directed by Siddharth Anand, “Bang Bang!” featured Hrithik Roshan and Katrina Kaif in lead roles. The movie was a remake of “Knight and Day”, which featured Tom Cruise and Cameron Diaz. Though the movie was mostly same as the Hollywood flick, there was a twist to it. It was a complete action-packed fun entertainer. Both Hrithik and Katrina were praised for their daredevil action sequences. The soundtrack from the movie was a quick hit too. It also featured Danny Denzongpa, Jaaved Jaffrey, Deepti Naval and Jimmy Shergill.

“Mary Kom”:

“Mary Kom” is a sports biopic based on five-time female World Boxing Champion MC Mary Kom. Directed by Omung Kumar, the titular character was played by Priyanka Chopra. The movie featured Kom’s journey of becoming a boxer from a fighter. The movie is an emotional journey of Kom where she fights for her passion with her father and how her husband supports her when she loses all hopes of going back in the ring again. It also featured Darshan Kumar and Sunil Thapa.

“Khoobsurat”:

“Khoobsurat”, directed by Shashanka Ghosh, was loosely based on Rekha-starrer 1980 film “Khubsoorat”. It featured Sonam Kapoor and Fawad Khan, who made his Bollywood debut with the movie. The movie revolved around a fun-loving, full-of-life physiotherapist Milli who falls in love with a prince while treating his father. It was a romantic story that will make you laugh, cry and go aww. The movie received mostly positive reviews. It also featured Kirron Kher, Ratna Pathak Shah, Aamir Raza Hussain and Aditi Rao Hydari. The movie released on September 19.

“Happy New Year”:

“Happy New Year” had a big star cast featuring Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone, Abhishek Bachchan, Boman Irani, Sonu Sood and Vivaan Shah. Directed by Farah Khan, the movie was a musical heist and released in theatres a day after Diwali on October 24. It revolved around six losers who plan a big robbery. The movie was funny in parts, but it was too monotonous at the same time. It received mixed reviews from the critics.

“Kick”:

Featuring Salman Khan, “Kick” released in theatres on July 25. The movie was directed by Sajid Nadiadwala and revolved around Devi Lal, a fun-loving man, looking for a ‘kick’ in his life and how he commits robberies to help poor children who are suffering from diseases and are unable to get the required money for their treatment. It received mixed reviews from the critics. “Kick” also featured Jacqueline Fernandez, Randeep Hooda and Nawazuddin Siddiqui.

“Mardaani”:

Directed by Pradeep Sarkar, “Mardaani” marked Rani Mukerji’s comeback. The movie released in theatres on August 22. It revolved around a female cop whose interest in the case of a kidnapped teenage girl leads her to uncover secrets of human trafficking by the Indian mafia. The movie received rave reviews from critics.

“Dedh Ishqiya”:

Directed by Abhishek Chaubey , “Dedh Ishqiya” is a black comedy thriller film. It featured Madhuri Dixit, Arshad Warsi, Naseeruddin Shah and Huma Qureshi in the lead roles. The movie is a sequel to 2010 movie “Ishqiya” and released in theatres on January 10. It received rave reviews from critics.

“Ankho Dekhi”:

Directed by Rajat Kapoor, “Ankho Dekhi” is the funny journey of an old man who one day decides to believe what he can see for himself. The movie featured Sanjay Mishra and Rajat in lead roles. It received positive reviews from the critics.

“PK”:

Directed by Rajkumar Hirani, “PK” featurs Aamir Khan, Anushka Sharma, Sushant Singh Rajput, Sanjay Dutt and Boman Irani. It revolved around a alien who lands in Rajasthan and can only return with the help of a locket, which is stolen by a local. Aamir’s performance in the movie has been highly praised. It is said to be the actor’s best performance till date. It is one of the most recommended movies of 2014. The other actors of the movie have also been praised for his performance.
