We Indians love song and dance and can’t even imagine Bollywood without them. As the year comes to an end, here’s a look at the compilation of some of the best albums this year that topped the music charts.
Race 2 (Music: Pritam)
The movie might have been a huge flop but the only thing that stood out was the music! Even though it just had four songs – Allah Duhaai Hain, Lat Lag Gayee, Be Intehaan and Party on My Mind, all of them were chartbusters! This album gets a thumbs-up owing to the catchy melodious tunes it offered.
Aashiqui 2 (Music: Mithoon, Jeet Ganguly, Ankit Tiwari)
This has to be the most popular album of the year with the whole nation suddenly crooning to Tum Hi Ho and Sun Raha Hain Tu. Aashiqui 2 has fresh and rhythmic songs that manage to touch our hearts. We aren’t surprised because you can trust the Bhatts to come up with a blockbuster music album like this one!
Yeh Jawani Hain Deewani (Music: Pritam)
Every party has the songs from Yeh Jawani Hain Deewani playing even till today! Whether it’s Balam Pichkari or Badtameez Dil, this movie had foot-tapping songs to offer for every occasion! While the party songs were a huge rage, even the soulful ones like Kabira and Illahi were great compositions leaving us totally mesmerized.
Raanjhana (Music: A.R Rahman)
You know there’s going to be great music when A.R Rahman is in the picture. A blend of Hindustani classical, jazz and sufi music – Raanjhana songs are poignant and pleasant to hear. Rahman has used a variety of musical instruments in all the songs having each one leave us with a different feel.
Lootera (Music: Amit Trivedi)
The songs of Lootera are nothing less than poetry in motion. One instantly gets reminded of S.D Burman on hearing the songs which have a Bengali touch to them. The songs perfectly keep up with the era in which the movie is based. Lootera makes for an unforgettable and tuneful album.
Chennai Express (Music: Vishal - Shekhar)
This one is a collection of peppy dance numbers, most of which had a south Indian touch to it. “Ticket khareed ke, baith ja seat pe, nikal na jaye Chennai Express”, sang S.P Balasubrahmanyam, marking his return to Bollywood after a long time with this album! Lungi Dance composed by Yo Yo Honey Singh did extremely well and was a common favourite of many!
Shuddh Desi Romance (Music: Sachin - Jigar)
The music of Shuddh Desi Romance is really very desi. However, only four songs from this album stood out. This album has fun lyrics and youthful music. A special mention Chanchal Mann, a quirky song which is quite hatke.
Phata Poster Nikhla Hero (Music: Pritam)
A complete album, this one is equipped with every kind of song from a romantic number to an item number, a peppy dance number and a sad song. Phata Poster Nikhla Hero might have been a lousy movie but the songs sure did stand out and the cherry on the cake was obviously watching Shahid Kapoor dance!
Ram Leela (Music: Sanjay Leela Bhansali)
A culturally rich album, this one oozed folk. It was the most revered album during this year’s Navratri and many more to come. This album boasts of hauntingly melodious songs that allow you to get lost in them. If you’re up for folk, you’ll love the songs of Ram Leela.
R..Rajkumar (Music: Pritam)
What else can you expect from a Prabhudeva movie? Yes, rowdy and masaledaar songs which make you want to dance! Don’t try and decode the lyrics, just get lost in the music and get dancing!
Gori Tere Pyaar Mein (Music: Vishal – Shekhar)
Another album where the lyrics don’t make sense at all. This one has enjoyable foot-tapping Punjabi beats. A complete party album, Gori Tere Pyaar Mein does not disappoint. However, we are still trying to figure out what made the lyricists use words like “Roka toh kiss my ass, toka toh kiss my ass, izzat se kiss my ass.”
Which one was your favourite?
