From comedies to love sagas and action thrillers, 2013 saw a host of movies. Here’s a special mention to a few of them which garnered a lot of appreciation this year. Take a look -

Special 26

Here is an intelligent, gripping and realistic thriller. After Akshay’s string of madcap comedies, comes Special 26 which has him playing a really convincing no-nonsense conman. This well written story might not be your quintessential Bollywood entertainer but it raves of a superb plot which is executed by actors like Akshay Kumar, Anupam Kher and Manoj Bajpai. After a long time, a thriller one wouldn’t want to miss!

Kai Po Che!

Based on Chetan Bhagat’s ‘Three Mistakes of My Life’, Kai Po Che is a tale of friendship, loss and aspirations. This film stands entirely on the shoulders of the three talented actors who might not be big names in Bollywood but very well managed to impress us with their performances. A warm film that touches upon a multitude of emotions in a seamless manner, this one was a terrific ode to friendship!

Sare Jahaan Se Mehenga

This small budget movie is a satire on the rising prices in the country. A movie that boasts of an excellent plot and superbly talented cast, this one garnered a lot of critical acclaim. Sare Jahaan Se Mehenga is honest and humorous – just how a satire should be!

Aashiqui 2

This musical drama is a sequel to 1990 blockbuster Aashiqui. Contrary of everyone’s concern, this movie did exceptionally well at the box office and is the third highest grossing film of 2013. What stood out in the movie was its soundtrack which topped the charts across India! While both the actors did a great job, the critics were disappointed with the storyline which according to them was rather mediocre.

Yeh Jawani Hain Diwani

This year saw the release of one of the most awaited films, Yeh Jawani Hain Diwani. The fact that this was Ranbir-Deepika’s first movie after their famous break up was reason enough for many to watch it. YJHD which did exceptionally well in the box office in terms of collections received mixed reviews. This movie had talented good lookers and fantastic songs – the perfect recipe for an entertainer!

Raanjhanaa

Recently released Raanjhanaa starring Sonam Kapoor and Dhanush garnered a lot of praise from the audience. It might look like just another love story but it’s not. A traditional love story presented in a refreshing way, Raanjhanaa managed to steal people’s hearts thanks to the direction, A.R Rahman’s soulful music and the lead actors who gave splendid performances!

Bhaag Milkha Bhaag

Now here’s a movie that not only performed exceptionally well at the box office, it also garnered a lot of praise from the critics. Even though it was said to be “too lengthy”, everyone agreed to the sheer brilliance of the makers and the leading actor, Farhan Akhtar. A true tribute to Milkha Singh, this one is surely going to bag a few awards this year.

Chennai Express

The most recent blockbuster hit in Bollywood, Chennai Express not only crossed the 100 crore mark but it also found its way to the 300 crore club worldwide. A typical Rohit Shetty movie, this one did wonders at the box office. A complete entertainer, Chennai Express did not fail to disappoint.

Madras Café

Away from all the song and drama, Madras Café was based on a real life political incident. With heart-wrenching visuals and a gripping storyline, Madras Café managed to outshine. Bollywood gets an above average war film after a long time!

Shuddh Desi Romance

Shuddh Desi Romance is a desi yet contemporary take on relationships! It’s a movie that many modern day couples can relate to. Due credit needs to be given to the leads for doing such a great job and playing their characters effortlessly!

The Lunchbox

A simple and beautifully crafted movie, The Lunchbox left us craving for more. This movie picks out instances from our daily routine and brings in so much depth to it. A heartwarming story, it spoke about how love can blossom between the unlikeliest of people.

Ram Leela

A passionate love story of Ram and Leela, this one made for a fabulous show. It was an adaptation of Romeo & Juliet served in complete Sanjay Leela Bhansali style – the colours, folk music, cheeky dialogues and everything else! What made it even better was the striking chemistry Ranveer Singh and Deepika Padukone shared.

Dhoom 3

Dhoom 3 which is said to the last of the Dhoom franchise is one of the most awaited films of the year. Going by the promising promos, it will be interesting to see what the reason behind this time’s cop – thief chase is! Aamir Khan will be seen in a totally different avatar this time. Excited much?
