A look back at the National Film Award for Bollywood’s Best Feature Film winners

The winners of the 62nd National Film Awards were announced at a press conference in Delhi on Tuesday. The official ceremony will be held on May 3rd. The Best Feature Film in Hindi Award went to ‘Queen’; Kangana Ranaut was honoured with the National Film Award for Best Actress; Priyanka Chopra’s ‘Mary Kom’ won the Best Popular Film Award. Shahid Kapoor’s ‘Haider’ won the Best Music Direction, Best Dialogue, Best Male Playback Singer, Best Choreography and Best Costumes.

Pinkvilla takes a look back at the Bollywood movies which won the National Film Award for Best Feature Film in Hindi in the last 10 years.

Black: Directed by Sanjay Leela Bhansali, the movie won the Best Feature Film in Hindi award at the 53rd National Film Awards. It revolved around a blind and deaf girl and her relationship with her teacher who later develops Alzheimer’s disease. Amitabh Bachchan played the teacher Debraj Sahai, while Rani Mukerji essayed the blind and deaf girl Michelle McNally. Big B was honoured with the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance in the movie.

Khosla Ka Ghosla: The movie won the Best Feature Film in Hindi award at the 54th National Film Awards. Directed by Dibakar Banerjee, it featured Anupam Kher, Boman Irani, Ranvir Shorey and Tara Sharma. It revolved around a Delhi based retired middle class man who tries half-heartedly to get his land back from a swindling property dealer with the help of his sons and their friends.

1971: This war drama won the Best Feature Film in Hindi award at the 55th National Film Awards. Directed by Amrit Sagar, the film is an account of the escape of six soldiers of the Indian Army taken as prisoners of war by Pakistan Army, during the Indo-Pakistani War of 1971. It starred Manoj Bajpai, Ravi Kishan, Piyush Mishra and Deepak Dobriyal.

Rock On!!: Directed by Abhishek Kapoor, the movie won the Best Feature Film in Hindi award at the 56th National Film Awards. The movie was a rock musical drama and featured Farhan Akhtar, Arjun Rampal, Luke Kenny, Purab Kohli, Prachi Desai and Shahana Goswami. It revolved around the members of Mumbai-based rock band “Magik”. Arjun was honoured with the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor for his performance in the movie.

Paa:‘Paa’ is based on a child suffering from a rare genetic disorder called Progeria. The movie, directed by R. Balki, featured Amitabh Bachchan, Abhishek Bachchan and Vidya Balan. It saw Abhishek essay the father while Big B played his son Auro. The movie not just won the Best Feature Film in Hindi award at the 57th National Film Awards, but even the megastar was honoured with the National Film Award for Best Actor for his performance.

Do Dooni Chaar: Directed by Habib Faisal, the movie featured Rishi Kapoor and Neetu Kapoor in lead roles. It revolved around a middle-class school teacher who tries to keep his wife and children happy in inflationary times and dreams of buying a car. It won the Best Feature Film in Hindi award at the 58th National Film Awards.

I Am:‘I Am’ is an anthology film by Onir. It featured four short films – ‘Omar’, ‘Afia’, ‘Abhimanyu’ and ‘Megha’. Each film shared the common theme of fear and was based on real life stories. The movie won the Best Feature Film in Hindi award at the 59th National Film Awards.

Filmistaan: Directed by Nitin Kakkar, the movie screened at many film festivals including the 17th Busan International Film Festival and the Mumbai Film Festival. It won the Best Feature Film in Hindi award at the 60th National Film Awards. It revolved an aspiring actor and diehard fan of Bollywood movies is kidnapped and held in the home of a Pakistani who deals in pirated Hindi films.

Jolly LLB:‘Jolly LLB’ is a courtroom comedy drama written and directed by Subhash Kapoor. The film featured Arshad Warsi, Boman Irani, Saurabh Shukla and Amrita Rao. The film revolved around a lawyer and his attempt to earn six innocent wage earners their rights and his journey against the monopolistic behaviour of the rich and judicial corruption. It won the Best Feature Film in Hindi award at the 61st National Film Awards and Saurabh was honoured with the National Film Award for Best Supporting Actor.

Queen: Directed by Vikas Bahl, the movie featured Kangana Ranaut in the lead role. It won the Best Feature Film in Hindi award at the 62nd National Film Awards and Kangana took home the National Film Award for Best Actress for her performance in the movie. The movie revolved around Kangana’s character Rani who goes on her honeymoon alone after her groom ditches her before the wedding.
